Pastor Scott McDowell, "Son of the Church"

Minister Scott McDowell, is the Pastor of Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Scotland Neck, NC.  He is one of eight children, was born to the late Walter and Ophelia McDowell and reared in Elizabethtown, North Carolina.  After graduating from East Bladen High, he joined the Army where he spent the next five years as part of the 82nd airborne division at Fort Bragg.  After being honorably discharged, he enrolled in college at Fayetteville State University, and received the Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.

He and his family moved to the Clayton area in 2004.  Currently, he serves as the department chair of history at Weldon High School where he teaches history and economics. One who seeks to be prepared, he is simultaneously completing his master’s degree in education administration at North Carolina Central University, and working on his master of divinity degree at Shaw University Divinity School.  He answered his call to ministry and was licensed to preach in August 2007 under the Reverend Dr. Terrence K. Leathers at Mt. Vernon Christian Church. 

He is an avid reader and enjoys working on his novel “Remnants from the Fire.�  He loves listening to all kinds of music, especially jazz, and has a weakness for hot chocolate chip cookies.  He is married to the former Sherilyn Powell and has three daughters, Andre, Mya and Attalia Ché.
Reverend Russell Cotton

The Reverend Russell Cotton was born in Bethel, North Carolina and raised in Oak City, North Carolina.  He graduated from Elizabeth City State University in 1978, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education.  He is also a graduate of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) Academy and was ordained under Bishop G. E. Patterson in August 1994.  He has also attended Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina.   Rev. Cotton served at Holy Temple COGIC in Hamilton, North Carolina, and Abundant Life Christian Center, in Raleigh North Carolina. He has worked over 25 years in the North Carolina banking systems thru out NC.

His professional experience has included services as chief executive officer of the St. Luke Credit Union (1999 and 2000), chief executive officer of VIP Mortgage and Financial Service, (1992 thru 2000), manager of The Associates Financial Service (also known as Citi-Corp., 1982 thru 1992).  He also hosted a talk radio show – VIP Straight Talk – for five years, and Gospel Video Show at WAUG-750 (St. Augustine’s College radio) for three years.  He currently works for the Wake County Schools. 

His hobbies include deer/ bird hunting on his family farm in Oak City, North Carolina and working out at the spa.  He is also active with community outreach programs such as Clayton Police and Park and Recreation department, the Raleigh-Millbrook Rotary Club, and those involving young people in the area’s local churches.

Rev. Cotton leads Mount Vernon’s Evangelism Ministry, and is an active member of the technology ministry as well.  Most recently he has begun working with Mt. Vernon’s community policing project.

He has been married over twenty-seven years to a wonderful wife, Mamie E. Cotten, an educator.  They are parents to two great kids -- Russell III, a freshman college student and Christin, a first year law student. They reside in Clayton, North Carolina.
